Nursery Rhymes Are Great Fun For Your Child!

Everyone heard nursery rhymes as a child, and now it's time to pass them on to your children. The history of nursery rhymes is quite interesting; most nursery rhymes originate from actual historical or political events from a long time ago. They were used as a parody of these events in a time when direct dissent against political figures would result in death! It's strange but true; and now, we entertain our children with nursery rhymes to help them to sleep at night, or to learn games that we played with nursery rhymes when we were kids!

An example of one nursery rhyme's original meaning – "Ring Around the Rosy", - is that it dates back to the Great Plague of London in 1665 (the bubonic plague). Symptoms of the sickness included a rosy red rash in the shape of a ring on the skin (a ring around the rosy). The people who weren't sick, filled pockets and pouches with sweet smelling herbs (or posies) which were carried because of the belief that the disease was transmitted by bad smells. The term "Ashes, Ashes" refers to the cremation of the bodies of the people who had died of the plague. The full version of the rhyme is the same as we hear today: "Ring around the rosy, A pocketful of posies, Ashes, Ashes, We all fall down!" There are historical references for almost every nursery rhyme you can think of; look online for more information about the origins of nursery rhymes.

Some examples of children's nursery rhymes that you can look for to teach your child are: Mother Goose nursery rhymes, the Jack and Jill nursery rhyme, the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme, the Three Little Kittens nursery rhyme, the Little Boy Blue nursery rhyme, the Simple Simon nursery rhyme, the Hey Diddle Diddle nursery rhyme, the Patty Cake nursery rhyme, and the Old Mother Hubbard nursery rhyme. You could also look for nursery rhymes from other cultures and languages like: Spanish nursery rhymes, French nursery rhymes, and Italian nursery rhymes.

Nursery rhyme lyrics are fun for children to say and also help develop their speech abilities when they are learning to talk; so make sure that your child learns some preschool nursery rhymes and nursery rhyme activities. Nursery rhyme games are also a great way to interact with your pre-speech baby and teach them language skills for the future.
